As the U.S. makes noises about finally withdrawing from Afghanistan, the pattern of spectacular disaster is all too clear. Beneath the folly of endless war lies the taboo question: “Why?” As Bacevitch states, “Prolonging this folly any longer does not serve U.S. interests. Rule number one of statecraft ought to be: when you’re doing something really stupid, stop.”
