Forum on VA Privatization
June 24 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDTFree
The definition of ‘privatization’ has long been contested. Most recently, a debate has sprung up in the realm of veteran healthcare over whether a slew of policy changes are privatizing department services or simply providing “choice” between the private and public sectors.
Some lawmakers, journalists, and advocates insist that privatization is only the wholesale selling-off of services and property, and therefore contend that the piecemeal outsourcing inside the Department of Veterans Affairs does not qualify.
On Thursday, June 24, the Veterans Healthcare Policy Institute (VHPI) will explore and interrogate differing definitions of privatization in hopes of clearing up confusion and creating more accuracy in policy debates.
- Suzanne Gordon, a long-time healthcare journalist and VHPI senior policy analyst
- Don Cohen, the founder and executive director of In the Public Interest, a national research and policy center on privatization of public goods and responsible contracting
- Charlene Harrington, a VHPI Advisory Board member and professor of sociology and nursing at the University of California San Francisco
The Zoom forum is scheduled for Thursday, June 24, 2 PM EST/ 11 AM PST.
