the irony

burns & novick’s

‘the vietnam war

now with the last performance done

the critics have their pithy say

and the caravan redisolves

back into mist-rimed memories,

the ethers from which it arose

renewed debates unreconciled

great expectations unfulfilled,

the promise betrayed in the end

—and, if the honest truth be told

surely the failure worst of all

given the shaded why and how,

the dishonest obfuscations,

all the unhidden truths ignored,

encrusted myths soft spun again

is that we can’t even call it

a historic production done

‘in good faith by decent people’, nor

‘out of fateful misunderstandings’
